In addition, a doula, someone specially trained as a labor and birth assistant, can
be used. A doula is not a medical professional, but provides physical, emotional and
informational support throughout labor and delivery. A doula can provide support after
the baby is born, as well. A doula does not take the place of the womans partner,
who remains an integral part of the process. A doula can be particularly helpful during
natural childbirth. Research shows that a doula can help decrease the request for
medication and decrease intervention rates.
Preparing for natural childbirth
If you decide on natural childbirth, you need to actively plan and prepare for it.
Planning should start in the early stages of the pregnancy. You need to educate yourself
about childbirth. There are many good books available that will help you understand what
will happen during childbirth, as well as the different birthing methods. Find childbirth
classes that teach natural childbirth methods. Get your support team together a
partner, family member, friend, doctor, midwife, or doula. You will also need to prepare
a birth plan, which outlines all aspects of how you want things handled during labor
and delivery. It is important to notify your healthcare provider of your wishes early
on in your pregnancy.
When things dont go as planned
No matter how well a woman prepares for childbirth, there is the possibility things
wont go as planned. Some things may be out of your control and the delivery may involve
medical intervention, such as an episiotomy or a cesarean section, if unexpected complications
arise. You may also decide on an epidural during the course of labor. Any changes in your birth
plan do not make you a failure. Everyone is different and there are some aspects of labor and
delivery that cannot be controlled.
