After Delivery

After Delivery (continued)

Activity and Treatments: If you had an epidural anesthesia or a Caesarean delivery, you will have a tube in your bladder (called a catheter) that will drain your urine into a bedside bag. The catheter may be removed by your nurse. Ask for help the first time out of bed. Do not get up without the assistance of the nurse or other team member. It is important for you to get rest, regardless of the type of delivery. Limiting phone calls and visitors will help you get the rest you need.

Teaching: You will receive written information on infant care and self-care skills. Your nurses will review the information throughout your hospital stay. Please read it and ask questions.

Safety: You will be oriented to your room and shown how to call the nurse. The number of the baby’s armband will be checked against yours whenever the baby has been taken away by a nurse or doctor and brought back to you. Do not allow anyone to take your baby out of your room unless you know who they are and they are wearing their pink-striped ID badge with a visible picture. Also, do not give out personal information over the phone to anyone you don’t know.

As a safety reminder for your newborn child, you must have a car seat installed in your automobile before you and your baby go home.

Never leave your baby alone in the room.

Infant care: You will be expected to start caring for your baby yourself (feeding and changing) as soon as you are able. Your baby will stay in your room with you, both day and night. But, if you can’t seem to get all the rest you need, your nurse will care for the baby in the nursery, until you feel rested enough to care for your baby in your room. There is also a transitional/observational newborn nursery available for those patients undergoing a caesarean delivery where the baby will be placed and cared for during the patient’s immediate post surgical recovery.

Second and Third Day After Delivery

Medications: If your blood is Rh negative, you may receive information about Rh immune globulin (Rhogam) if your doctor orders it for you. It is given by injection.

Nutrition and Diet: After a Caesarean delivery, you may be able to eat whatever you like. You may also have food from home.
