A law enacted in 1997 by the State of California requires health plans to provide for a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for new mothers following a vaginal delivery and a 96-hour stay after a caesarean delivery. The Mother/Baby Home Follow-Up Program is designed for the healthy mother and baby who choose, after consultation with their obstetrician and pediatrician, to be discharged prior to the 48-or 96-hour time frame. The physician must approve the discharge in writing before the mother and baby are released from the hospital.

Little Company of Mary Hospital is proud to offer a very unique service to our community. The Pediatric Call Service consists of a group of community pediatricians who provide pediatric care when it’s most difficult for parents and other caregivers to access care — during the hours of 6:00 pm - 6:00 am on weekdays, and 1:00 pm - 6:00 am on weekends and specified holidays.  

If your child becomes ill during these hours and you call your pediatrician, you will be referred to the Pediatric Call service. Call (310) 540-7676 to request this service with a nurse. Many times, the nurse can answer your question directly. If the nurse feels that your child needs to be seen by the pediatrician on call, an appointment will be scheduled. The pediatrician on call will meet you at Little Company of Mary Hospital at the appointment time.

If the problem is urgent, the nurse may advise you to bring your child immediately to Little Company of Mary Hospital. Please use the Emergency Department entrance and check in at the desk. Remember the physician is not at the hospital at all times, so please call before coming to the Pediatric Call Service to make arrangements with the nurse for an appointment time.
