For the past 8 years, Little Company of Mary has developed and maintained guidelines for
the care and treatment of specific patient types. These guidelines are referred to as
CareMaps. An example of one of these guidelines is to provide prophylactic antibiotics
for surgical patients to prevent infections. Utilization of the CareMaps contributes to
patient safety through the following:
Includes the most up-to-date processes of care that have proven to reduce the probability
of adverse events and improve patient outcomes.
Ensures that patients with the same diagnosis or procedure receive the same level of safe
quality care.

The risk of falling while hospitalized is high, especially if the patient is elderly, weak
and/or confused. We take the following actions to help prevent and reduce falls:
Patients are assessed on admission to identify those patients at greatest risk
for falling and appropriate fall precautions are taken.
Side rails and restraints are used when appropriate and indicated by the patients
condition.
Information regarding reasons for falls and precautions that patients and families can
take is provided on admission.
Phones, call lights and personal items are placed so patients can reach them
easily.
Non-skid slippers are provided for patients.
Bed alarms are used for certain high risk patients.
